Compares U.S.-backed state-building in South Vietnam and Afghanistan through Charles Tilly’s framework of raising money, building armies, and forming nations.
“Sign-Language with Vessels: The Politics of China’s Assertiveness in the South China Sea”. Employs qualitative research, game theory, and Dynamic Difference-in-Differences to examine how U.S. high-level diplomatic visits to South China Sea claimant states correlate with China’s maritime activities.
“World Bank Aid and Corruption: Evidence from Vietnam”. Uses the Synthetic Control Method to show that a World Bank project in Thai Nguyen (2019–2023) significantly boosted the province’s anti-corruption scores compared to similar provinces, highlighting the governance benefits of well-designed aid.
